Vastu for Every Room: Kitchen, Bedroom, Pooja & Toilet Directions
Once the plot orientation and main door are set, Vastu is really about zoning — placing the right room in the right direction. Here is a practical, room-by-room guide you can use while planning a new home or evaluating an existing one.
Kitchen — South-East (Agneya)
The kitchen belongs to the fire element, so its natural home is the South-East. Position the cooking platform so you face East while cooking. If South-East is not possible, North-West is an acceptable alternative. Keep the cooking and washing zones apart — fire and water should not sit side by side.
Master Bedroom — South-West (Nairutya)
The South-West is the zone of stability and relationships, making it ideal for the master bedroom. Place the bed so your head points South or East while sleeping. Avoid a mirror facing the bed, and avoid a bedroom in the North-East, which should stay light.
Pooja Room — North-East (Ishanya)
The North-East is the most sacred zone, bathed in morning light — the ideal place for a pooja or meditation space. Keep it clean, uncluttered and slightly elevated. Idols should face West so worshippers face East.
Toilets & Bathrooms — North-West or West
Place toilets in the North-West or West, and strictly avoid the North-East and the centre (Brahmasthan) of the home. Keep the centre of the house open and light — it is the energetic heart of the plan.
Living & Dining
- Living room: North, East or North-East works well and welcomes guests with good energy.
- Dining: West or East, ideally close to the kitchen.
- Study / office: East or North; sit facing East or North while working.
Staircase & Storage
Staircases sit best in the South, South-West or West and should turn clockwise. Heavy storage and overhead tanks belong in the South-West; keep the North-East light and open.
A quick room-direction cheat sheet
- North-East: pooja, water source, open space
- East: entrance, living, study, windows
- South-East: kitchen, electricals
- South-West: master bedroom, heavy storage
- North-West: guest room, toilets, garage
- Centre: keep open and clutter-free
